HCPC Standard 4.9: Be able to use a range of integrated skills and self awareness to manage clinical challenges effectively in unfamiliar and unpredictable circumstances or situations.
I think the key terms to consider here are resilience, adaptability and maybe self reflection. We can think about toolkits to develop these skills, reflective practice as a regular tool in itself, and anything that you do to practice your medical skills in excessively unusual environments to your everyday – expedition medicine, film and event work, humanitarian work – can all be considered examples of development in these areas. Difficult jobs you go to, perhaps in unusual environments or with particularly challenging patients, could also be considered as development here.
How do you ensure you are at your best in these situations? Have you completed specific courses, read and reflected on books about these topics, or do you use techniques to excel in these areas? This might link to leadership and communication skills or courses, and to standards of proficiency in those areas, too.
